Welcome to the first installment of our Autumn/Winter 2023 collection. Traditionally, when the evenings drew in, and sky and sea grew darker, people on the Island would visit each other’s houses, pulling their stools close to the warmth of the fireside, to tell stories and talk over matters of farming, fishing, and island life. Inspired by the relaxation and easy conviviality of an Chuairt — ‘the visit’ — our seasonal collection features beautiful new styles in relaxed silhouettes and rich tones.
The red dresses of the women who cluster round the fire on their stools give a glow of almost Eastern richness, and the walls have been toned by the turf smoke to a brown that blends with the grey earth colour of the floor.
The Aran Islands — J. M Synge, 1907
New additions for this season include a novel version of the favourite Boatbuilder Turtleneck — the Pocket Boatbuilder — featuring a warm double pocket stretching along the whole sweater front. The Fánach, or random-stitch Tunic, converted from summer linen, creates a contemporary, informal take on the Birdseye stitch. And as always, our signature Knitted Jackets, including the new Patented Aran Jacket, layer up to create warm, relaxed looks for lingering winter chats both inside and out.
AW23 brings a significant step forward in Inis Meáin’s pursuit of excellence, by using only super-premium Cashmere and Merino yarns from Italian heritage producer, Filati Biagioli Modesto, for additional longevity, comfort and an even softer hand-feel. Made to the highest European environmental standard and using only organic dyes, this renowned family company has been crafting the finest of yarns for over 100 years and is favoured by the most selective and distinguished knitwear designers around the world.
New styles and colours in Mens, Womens and Accessories will arrive to the online shop over the Autumn and Winter of 2023, including many lighter layering garments in our unique horizontal herringbone stitch and our super-fine merino turtlenecks, as well as our ever popular Baby Alpaca and Silk Tunics, Cardigans, Jackets and Scarves.
This is slow fashion. Each piece takes about a year from design, to yarn procurement, to knitting, and after all of that we only make about 15 garments on average per colour, without any production capacity to reknit best-sellers, so each Inis Meáin piece is very, very special. Please be patient and keep tuned.
Crafted with comfort, luxury and sustainability in mind, every piece is designed, made and hand-finished with pride in our Aran Islands workshop.
Relax, rest, enjoy your visit.
