Supporting our thriving island community
The ancient Irish proverb Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine loosely translates as we live in the shelter of our neighbours. Inis Meáin has the smallest population of the three Aran Islands with around 160 inhabitants. With a team of over 20 people, Inis Meáin Knitwear has been the largest employer on the island for almost fifty years. Sustainable Style
For centuries, Inis Meáin was the least accessible of the three Aran Islands. We were once completely dependent on sea travel, and communication with the mainland was sparse and unpredictable. Responding to the ever-changing weather is natural to daily life here in addition to being a significant influence on our design aesthetic. Traditional characteristics of islanders are self-sufficiency and resourcefulness. We are accustomed to living in a sustainable way and have always been deeply connected to our natural surroundings. read more
