Cookie Policy

This page contains information on what cookies are, the cookies used by the Inis Meáin Knitting Co. website, and how to switch cookies off in your browser.

What are cookies?

This site, like many others, uses small files called cookies to help us customise your experience.

Cookies are small text files that are stored by the browser (for example, Chrome, Internet Explorer or Safari) on your computer or mobile phone. They allow websites to store things like user preferences.

You can think of cookies as providing a ‘memory’ for the website, so that it can recognise you when you come back and respond appropriately.

How does the Inis Meáin Knitting Co. website use cookies?

A visit to a page on our website may generate the following types of cookie:

  • Anonymous analytics cookies
  • E-commerce session cookies
  • Cookies from external websites

Anonymous analytics cookies

Every time someone visits our website, our tracking software, Google Analytics, generates an “anonymous analytics cookie”. These cookies can tell us whether or not you have visited the site before.

Your browser will tell us if you have these cookies and, if you don’t, we generate new ones. This allows us to track how many individual users we have, and how often they visit the site.

We cannot use these cookies to identify individuals. We use them to gather statistics, for example, the number of views on our products.

E-commerce system cookies

We use WooCommerce and WordPress software to run our content management and e-commerce systems, which may generate cookies when you visit any of our pages.

These cookies are required for the e-commerce software to function properly, such as to keep track of items in your “bag”, and are completely anonymous.

When you register an account and log into our site, we use a WordPress session cookie that lets us know whether you are signed in or not, and if you are allowed access to a particular page, such as a list of your recent orders or delivery address. These cookies are required for the “My Account” area of the site to function properly.

If you have not selected “Remember me” on the login page, your cookies get deleted when you either close your browser or shut down your computer.

Other third party cookies

On some pages of our website, other organisations may also set their own cookies.

We use Global Payments and PayPal to accept payments from our customers through our e-commerce system. During the payment process you will be taken to either one of these sites, which may generate their own cookies.

We embed YouTube videos into some of our “Island Diary” posts, which may also generate cookies.

We embed a Google Map on the Stockists page, which may generate cookies.

Because of how cookies work, our website cannot access these external cookies, nor can the other organisation access the data in cookies we use on our website.

How do I turn cookies off?

It is usually possible to stop your browser accepting cookies, or to stop it accepting cookies from a particular website. However, we cannot process your orders if you disable cookies as they are required for our e-commerce system to function.

All modern browsers allow you to change your cookie settings. You can usually find these settings in the Options or Preferences menu of your browser. To understand these settings, the following links may be helpful, or you can use the Help option in your browser for more details.
