Ceann Gainimh on Inis Meáin is an expansive sand headland to the north of the island lined by sand dunes covered in Marram grass. On lengthening Spring evenings with soft pink skies descending over Galway Bay and distant Connemara Mountains, this gorgeous spot is a haven of escape. As our company founder, Tarlach de Blácam describes in Irish below, the Marram grass, or Muiríneach, was introduced to the island and planted by the island community on a volunteer basis at Ceann Gainimh in the early 1970s. This was done to protect the airstrip that runs next to the beach as Marram grass helps to create and sustain sand dunes through its sturdy leaves that slow the wind and deep roots that bind the sand.

Nuair a tógadh an aerstráice sa mbliain 1973, bhí contúirt go dtiocfadh an fharraige isteach air. Teaspáineann an pictiúr thuas curach ag teacht ón stíomar ag Ceann Gainimh sa mbliain 1930 sul a cuireadh an muiríneach (féar trá) ag fás ann. Bhí scéim ag an Roinn Talmhaíochta an t-am sin, 1973/4, le muiríneach a chur leis an gcósta a chosaint. Sin ceann de na chéad rudaí a rinne an Comharchumann anseo an t-am sin. Tháinig an muiríneach i mbád as Cill Chiaráin agus sáthadh é i gCeann Gainimh (le obair in aisce).

The dunes receive such a storm-lashing on our Atlantic Island that the Marram grass colours are a constantly changing kaleidoscope of green, grey, beige, yellow, and amber, inspiring the yarn mélange of our recently reknit Buttoned Polo in Sage Marl, a new colour this season. Whether out at sea, on the coast, or inshore, the exceptional nature, culture and history of the Aran Island's unique maritime location informs our Spring / Summer 2025 Collection - Aran and the Sea - celebrating the unbreakable bond between the Aran Islanders and the surrounding ocean.
