Welcoming Summer with a Complimentary Linen Scarf
The Cuckoo bird is fondly welcomed in Inis Meáin as a harbinger of early summer. Cuckoos winter in central and southern Africa, and the young Cuckoos born in Inis Meáin manage to migrate successfully to Africa in late summer, a few weeks ahead of their parents. In a community so close to nature, this wondrous phenomenon and the distinctive Cuckoo call has long captured the imagination and the Cuckoo or An Chuach in Irish, is often included in local names and sayings associated with the island's nature, even traditionally helping in long-range weather forecasting and farm planning... read more

Contemporary Womenswear Island Individuality
Go maire tú is go gcaithe tú é… May you live long to wear it… This is the eloquent sentiment traditionally used on the island when gifting a unique piece, woven or knitted especially for the recipient. Clothing has always had an importance beyond warmth on the Aran Islands. Women looked after the dressing of the whole household; spinning, dying, weaving and knitting yarn to design, and make, clothing for all the family. read more

Celebrating an enduring family heritage

Celebrating an enduring family heritage
Knitting has always been a family enterprise on the Aran Islands. Women were skilled knitters who clothed their families and themselves, often coming up with new and inventive patterns which were handed down from one generation to the next. Fishermen wore their wives’ creations; a plain knit for workwear and another, more intricate style, kept as ‘Sunday best’. The de Blacam family have become synonymous with high-quality knitwear around the world since the foundation of the Inis Meáin Knitting Company almost 50 years ago. Tarlach de Blacam and his wife Áine, a native islander, established the company to create employment for the women of the island. They saw the potential for slow, sustainable, high-quality knitwear, with every piece designed to be worn for life. This company has been the main employer on the small island of Inis Meáin ever since. read more

The Texture of History… Linen on Inis Meáin
From flax to fabric, the story of linen is deeply connected to Inis Meáin. One of the oldest textile fabrics in the world, flax was used in textiles in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) as far back as the Neolithic period. Its species name Linum utisatissimum—meaning ‘most useful’—is particularly apt, as flax has been grown in Ireland since the Bronze Age and been cultivated for use for clothing for a thousand years. read more
