J.M. Synge — The Aran Islands

8th May 2010

Ba í Inis Meáin an tobar do lucht na h-aithbheochana agus do chuid mhaith do scríbhneoirí an bhéarla in Éireann. Tá cur síos álainn ar shaol an oileáin ag an am sin le fáil i leabhar J. M. Synge, The Aran Islands. Seo thíos mar a thrácht sé ar stíl mhuintir Inis Meáin:

Inis Meáin was the well from which all of the students and leaders of the Gaelic revival of the late 19th, early 20th century drew.  It was also a huge source of inspiration to the great Anglo Irish writers of this period, most famously J. M. Synge.  His description of life in Aran (mostly Inis Meáin) in his classic “The Aran Islands” includes the following comment on local style:

“The simplicity and unity of the dress increases in another way the local air of beauty.”

John Millington Sygne | Griangrafadóir (c.1898)
