For generations, the wives of Island fishermen knitted Aran workwear for their families. A century ago, Máire Cáit, a skilled and imaginative knitter who wanted her husband Máirtín Beag’s workwear to look as special as his Sunday Best, created her own design flourishes. Two decades ago, we uncovered one of her original handknits in a barn, and it’s been a creative touchstone for us ever since.
In July, we launched the Máirtín Beag Galánta, a new version made of a cashmere and Super Geelong merino wool blend. We were not surprised when the special Navy colourway sold out very quickly. Now, for those that missed out, the Máirtín Beag Galánta is back in a new colour, Charcoal, a rich black. Comfortable and stylish, this is workwear reimagined as modern, cosmopolitan clothing.
With front neck and cuff loops, and featuring intricate cables with a ribbed cuff and welt. The high neck is finished with monotone Buffalo horn button from specialists Bottonificio Padano in Padova, fastened with loops for a stylish yet simple closure. Made and hand-finished in our Aran Islands workshop.
