Although officially Autumn, from a vacation point of view, August is definitely summer in Inis Meáin and the month kicks off with the island's annual sports festival. Also a homecoming weekend for islanders settled elsewhere, flying home for summer vacation to Inis Meáin has quite a literal meaning as every house on the island can be seen on the landing approach, as well as our Workshop and Island Store to the right of the aerial view above. read more

Oíche Fhéil Sain Seáin, St. John's Eve, is a special summer's night on Inis Meáin. Falling on June 23rd, bonfires are widely lit in the west of Ireland, however on Inis Meáin it is also a celebration of the patron saint of the island. The Knitwear Workshop is closed for an Island Holiday on June 24th for St. John's Day - conveniently as all the revelry happens the night before. read more

Until the first daily boat service to Inis Meáin began in the late 1990s, travel to and from Inis Meáin was very difficult, and to this day Inis Meáin remains a remote outpost, where traditions are cherished. A journey to or from the island involves an hour's ferry journey or a 10 seater plane ride to rural Connemara - neither of which makes a daily commute possible. There is a very old custom or ritual, which has been practised in the island for centuries. On the eve of the feast of St Brigid, January 31st, all the young girls (under twelve) visited every house in the island with a Brídeog, a doll made of straw and clothed in a bright dress, ribbons and some jewellery. read more
